A strong start to 2016 for heavy truck market as new registrations grow by a fifth

The first information covering the new truck market has finally been released.  It has taken until June to see what may have happened back in January this year – but the news is good. Unless you are Mercedes-Benz, that is.

  • Truck RegNew HGV market grows 19.2% in Q1 of 2016, with 10,363 units registered
  • Demand for rigids over 16T fuels market growth, with a 48.1% increase
  • Articulated segment declines -9.3%, driven by a fall in demand for 3-axle units.

The new truck market in the UK grew by almost a fifth in the first quarter of 2016 according to figures released by the SMMT.

Growth was driven by an increased demand for rigids, specifically those over 16 tonnes which saw a 48.1% rise, offsetting a small decline in 3-axle artic registrations.

The Manufacturer’s Market

All the news looks good at the top of the table, with DAF and Scania performing well against last year. MAN too have performed well compared to their lacklustre start to 2015 and find themselves just 124 registrations short of Mercedes-Benz.

It is Mercedes-Benz that are the only ones to struggle at the start of 2016, slipping two places in the market share table and losing nearly seven market share percentage points.
