Summer stock drought but Mitsubishi L200 4×4 remains abundant
Based on industry data and feedback from independent and franchised dealers, the Mycarcheck.com/trade monthly bulletins highlight the most significant trends in the UK van market.
MyCarCheck.com/Trade’s LCV expert, David Hill, commented: “The market has slowed down as it should do at this time of year. We have lowered values by 1% for July. Retailers are complaining that the phone has stopped ringing, but this is perhaps a sign that business has been fairly good over the last few months. Over the summer we will see less stock coming into the market and even the duplicate stock will dry up. It will be harder to buy stock until the back end of the year.
“In terms of small vans, we have some Vauxhall Corsa models coming from a utility company in various shades of blue – these are finding homes easily. The Sport derivative of Ford Fiesta remains popular with even high mileage examples achieving trade values if clean and tidy. Renault Clio and Peugeot 207 vans are practically non-existent – if you see one, buy it!
“Volkswagen Caddy vans are making a comeback, but with some noticeable price differences depending on where they are for sale. Ford Transit Connect is still good news in any colour and Trend models are excellent news. Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner are around in volume and still finding buyers. Fiat Doblo is also making a comeback, but the right specification and a silver colour will help. Fiat Scudo and its stablemates are ok but better with a few goodies on.
“Mercedes Vito low mileage examples are hard to find and you have to give all the money for them. Crew van dual liners in general are very well sought after. Volkswagen Transporter is still top of the shopping list – for a 140BHP model in a good colour with a DSG Gearbox you are well into ready to retail values, whatever the mileage so long as it’s clean. Transporter Shuttle and Kombis are also great news.
“Ford Transit vans remain in good supply with 280 short mediums the most common – if remarketed well values are still steady. On the Vauxhall Vivaro we are coming to the end of the TV vans now, but the trade still has retail homes for them with larger panel vans in short supply.
“A long and high Mercedes Benz Sprinter with low mileage will set you back trade value at least. Higher mileage examples tend not to be in clean condition, or are multi-coloured, so values suffer. Ford Transit long wheelbase high roof models also have to be clean and tidy, and the same goes for Fiat Ducato – if they are they easily achieve trade money.
“Late plate Renault Masters appearing in the marketplace from a national daily rental company are proving popular with trade buyers. They appeal as something a bit different and come with a good specification.
“The 4×4 market is very slow. With an abundance of Mitsubishi L200 in the marketplace values are again down across all manufacturers. The only good news is we have seen some Mitsubishi ASX 4×4 vans that achieved trade values – in fact the trade were fighting for them.
“Chassis are still good news – Tippers are the only area of caution, anything else is an easy sell. The minibus market is slow and with the new driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) rules expected in September it may be a few months before this segment sorts itself out.”
