Customers of Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealer Intercounty Truck & Van are benefiting from a series of investments at the company’s Wellingborough headquarters which have resulted in increased efficiency and reduced vehicle turnaround times. Intercounty has spent nearly £50,000 in recent months on improving the facilities at its dealership on the Finedon Road Industrial Estate. Most of that money has been spent in the 24-hour workshop, where a new floor has been laid and colour-coded in line with ‘lean’ working practice principles, to ensure best use is made of technicians’ time and none is lost, for example, searching for misplaced tools.
In another move that is increasing vehicle ‘uptime’, Intercounty has also installed its own ‘rolling road’ commercial vehicle brake tester – previously, it had to take trucks and vans elsewhere for testing, which was time-consuming and costly. The dealer now plans to install a new, more powerful lighting system in the workshop.
Meanwhile, Intercounty’s Service and Parts receptions have also been given a complete facelift, with new furniture and a much more comfortable and relaxing customer waiting area – complete with flat-screen TV and drinks-making facilities – giving the dealership a fresher, more modern appearance.
“It’s very gratifying to be investing in our facilities,” said After Sales Director Martyn Clipston, “especially at a time when so many other businesses are unable to do likewise, often because of a lack of finance. Ours is a pressurised industry in which many operators must deliver goods day and night to strict deadlines, so they are entitled to expect the very highest levels of service. The improvements we have made are already benefiting customers, as well as the staff who work in these areas.
Intercounty Truck & Van inherited its Wellingborough premises when it took on its Mercedes-Benz franchise in 2003 – the company’s other main dealerships in Milton Keynes and Peterborough were both purpose-built the following year.
