Falling van demand easing - but trucks dive again

New van and heavy commercial vehicle registrations continue to fall, reflecting the low level of demand across the UK economy. It is extremely important that Government continues with measures to sustain business confidence and strengthen the recovery,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.

MAN was the shining light in the famine that was October’s registration figures.  Without the advantage of a stock of Euro5 vehicles to move in September prior to the expiry of the RPC, MAN have done well to move up a couple of places during the Autumn months.  MAN still have some way to go to make up for the 1 ¼% market share lost so far this year.

Light Commercial Vehicles

There was a real turnaround of fortune for nearly every major manufacturer in October with the exception of the top two, Ford and Vauxhall. Now doubts over the Luton brand’s ownership have finally been cleared up, maybe Vauxhall can get back to business as usual and challenge Ford’s dominance of the UK market again.  The French manufacturers all posted good results, with Citroen leading the pack – a massive 39% up on October 2009.  As Citroen punch above their weight in the scrappage stakes, it may prove that, when the scrappage figures are revealed, the reduction in the scheme’s age limitation for vans will have helped Citroen to deliver these results.  Despite Citroen’s success in October, there is a good chance that Mercedes-Benz will recapture their fourth place in the table from them by the end of the year.

Ford again dominated the ‘inbetween’ category of heavy vans, whilst every other manufacturer failed to even come close to their number of registrations last October.
