April 2009

"UK commercial vehicle registrations continue to fall steeply reflecting slow sales over the last six months, but a few truck makers report an increase in enquiries. In many cases the price differential caused by the low value of the pound against the euro stifles potential sales," said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. "While we see the government's policy bringing some relief, confidence remains subdued. We see little evidence to indicate a quick recovery and expect a record low for year-end van and truck registrations."

Heavy Commercial Vehicles

Iveco and Mercedes-Benz are the 'losers' in the way the SMMT has changed their figures. They have taken out the 'heavy vans' up to 6 tonnes to bring the statistics more into line with our European counterparts. Iveco's Daily and Mercedes-Benz' Sprinter sales above 3.5 tonnes do not help to boost their 'truck sales' figures. This has not had an effect on Mercedes' position, despite 'losing' a quarter of their truck registrations. For Iveco however, it has resulted in the loss of two positions in the monthly chart.

There is little good news, with Mercedes-Benz still faring the best amongst a bad performing bunch. DAF are still performing well against the market - increasing their share to a staggering 30% so far this year.

Light Commercial Vehicles

Peugeot and Nissan are still faring better than most in the continuing shocking market conditions with Iveco, Fiat, Mercedes-Benz and Renault bringing up the rear. The top two manufacturers also gained market share, although there will be little cause for celebration - especially during this nail-biting period at Vauxhall's Luton headquarters. As far as performance in the 'heavy van' sector is concerned Mercedes has improved their performance despite heavy losses in the mainstream sector. Fiat are down in this area - demonstrating how poorly the camper conversion market is performing.
