Trucks up and Vans Down in January

SMMT logo
Data from the SMMT
“The commercial vehicle market got off to a mixed start in January with very strong truck registrations outweighed by a fall in the van market,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive. “Over the course of 2012 SMMT expects the CV market to be steady, ending the year marginally up on 2011. Government support for business will be key to maintaining market stability. If confidence can be maintained through the year, we should see growth in 2013.”

Heavy Commercial Vehicles January 2012

After 2011’s robust recovery in truck demand, and a notably strong final quarter, there was no let-up in January. Growth was robust again; the positive trend in very firm demand continued. Registrations of all trucks >3.5t were 3,586, up by 45.4%; trucks >6t saw 3,191 registrations, up 49.4%. SMMT is cautious, but hopes these levels of demand can hold into 2012.

The Manufacturers’ Market

HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES 6t and Above

A bumper January followed a bumper December as the truck market contined with growth across all sectors, but notably in the rigid sector that until now had fallen behind the growth of the artics.  This meany a great month for Iveco, leapfrogging MAN to take fifth place, as MAN slipped from third at the end of 2011 down to 6th at the start of this year.  A great month for Scania which saw the manufacturer return to third place in the table after being knocked off by MAN at the end of last year.

 Light Commercial Vehicles January 2012

January’s van registrations opened 2012 on a cautious note. At 14,338 it was below SMMT’s recently revised forecasts of 17,000 for the month, down 16.4% on January 2011 (which was up near 50% on January 2010). If the year pans-out as expected, van registrations will be stable in very weak economic and uneasy financial settings.

The Manufacturers’ Market

January is a relatively insignificant month as far as van registrations are concerned, so trends for the year ahead are hard to forecast.  It is now clear that 2012 should be the year in which Volkswagen take second spot from Vauxhall, even though VW have reduced their advertising budget in certain areas for the first quarter.  The new Combo will not be sold in numbers until the second quarter, although the company still has plenty of the outgoing model.  Renault’s start to the year was a disaster, down 50% on 2011 and dropping immediately to 8th from 6th in the market share league table.

Mercedes-Benz remains on song in the heavyweight van sector with registrations almost twice their 2011 figure, whilst Ford did enough to regain top spot for the Transit.  Iveco and Volkswagen meanwhile had a poor start to the year, whilst the bottom six players managed to register just one heavy van between them.
