November van and truck market continues upward trend, growing 19.1%

“The commercial vehicle market remains buoyant with October registrations up by more than 10% and year to date up by nearly 20%,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive. “Efficiency is a key driver as operators are investing in the latest models across almost every market sector to reap the rewards of greater load carrying ability and fuel economy. These remain challenging economic conditions and we are looking to the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement later this month to set out measures to boost growth and steady business confidence.”

Heavy Commercial Vehicles November 2011

November saw truck volumes up by 21.5%. The very recent trend for growth in two-axle rigids above 6t continued. This development is welcome, as these sectors had lagged in what was until lately a mostly artic and multi-axle rigids-led recovery from Q4 2010.  For all trucks >6t growth was 25.6% for the month, 34.4% for the year to November and 36.9% for the rolling year. This positive and sustained trend is welcome given weaker GDP and broader macroeconomic challenges ahead.

The Manufacturers’ Market

HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES 6t and Above

All change in the truck league table in November – unusual for so late in the year.  The competition is tight for third place between Volvo and MAN, whilst sixth place is being hotly contested between Renault and Iveco.  With ojnly December left to make a difference, the manufacturers will be busy delivering vehicles prior to the January deadline for the next stage of the London LEZ.

Light Commercial Vehicles November 2011

Van registrations were up 18.6% in November, with rises for almost all weight categories above 2t. The rolling three-month volume has seen a stable rate of increase in the range 8.4% to 11.2% for each of the five months since July. Across the many van segments the recovery in registration volumes has generally been firmest for vans above 2t, pickups and 4X4 Utilities. This was again the case at November; the notable exception was for vans in the 2.5t to 2.8t sector, a trend set over the course of 2011. The rolling year to November was 258,824 for all vans, taking the total above the 250,000 for the first time since February 2009.

The Manufacturers’ Market

A pretty good month for most van makers – only Renault and Citroen failed to keep up with their 2010 performance whilst the relatively mild winter to the end of November may have impacted the new 4×4 sales of Mitsubishi and Isuzu. Mercedes-Benz put on a late spurt to regain their fourth place spot that the company enjoyed in 2010 – Mercedes now lays just under 250 registrations away from fourth placed Peugeot.  Vauxhall will keep their customary second place – but the margin is now so tight it is almost inevitable that VW will overtake the GM-owned business in 2012.  Next stop position 1 for Europe’s largest car maker?

Normal procedures apply in the middleweight category with Ford back at the top of the table – rather than the third place the company had not been enjoying for the previous few months.  Although Ford’s 2011 volumes are half of those enjoyed in 2010, at least the company is still at the top albeit with a share reduced from 42% to just 25%.
