October van and truck market accelerates, growing 10.7% SMMT logo

“The commercial vehicle market remains buoyant with October registrations up by more than 10% and year to date up by nearly 20%,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive. “Efficiency is a key driver as operators are investing in the latest models across almost every market sector to reap the rewards of greater load carrying ability and fuel economy. These remain challenging economic conditions and we are looking to the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement later this month to set out measures to boost growth and steady business confidence.”

Heavy Commercial Vehicles October 2011

October’s growth in truck volumes was notably robust across all segments; even two-axle rigids to 6t and the 6t-16t segments saw growth on last year. This boost is welcome, as these sectors had lagged while others recovered. However, a firm growth trend, seen since the summer, sets year-to-date truck registrations up 22.7%.

For all trucks >3.5t growth was 33.3% for the month; for trucks >6t 34.2%. This solid performance is encouraging and reflects the progressive recovery in the new truck market despite wider economic challenges.

The Manufacturers’ Market

HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES 6t and Above

Market leaders DAF showed the rest of the industry a clean pair of heels in October, whilst MAN continued to pull away from Volvo and sister company, Scania.  The combined registrations for MAN and Scnai would still leave MAN in first place in the league table – but not by much DAF remain just 348 trucks ahead in the UK registrations battle.

Towards the bottom of the table, the Iveco/Renault Trucks tussle continues, with Iveco remaining ahead – but only by 54 registrations.  Renault could still take the sixth place from under Iveco’s nose.

 Light Commercial Vehicles October 2011

Van registrations grew 6.7% in October with rises for almost every weight category. The rate of increase on 2010 has eased from the highs seen early in the year but despite this, rolling year figures are still up 18.2%.

For all segments below 2.5t, registrations rose 27.4% for the month; 11% for the year-to-date and 14.5% for the 12 months to October. In the 2.5t to 3.5t segments, total volume fell 3% in the month, but were up 17.9% on the YTD. 4×4 utilities saw growth of 5% for the month and 27% for the rolling year.

The Manufacturers’ Market

Ford struggled more than most in the new registration stakes, whilst second, third and fourth-placed manufacturers all enjoyed solid double-digit growth; Ford’s registrations slumped by 6%.  Weaker performances from Renault and Mercedes-Benz make it likely that Peugeot have done enough to secure their fourth place in the market share table for 2011 – a meteoric rise from down in seventh place in 2010.   Worty of note is the addition of ‘Great Wall’ – SMMT-speak for the Donfeng imports of the micro van through the importer and distributor, Vestatec Automotive Distribution.

Mercedes-Benz fortunes are much rosier in the ‘middleweight’ category, leading the market for the third month in a row in the face of Ford’s market share collapse – down from 42% in 2010 to just 23% this year so far.  In this category Peugeot have also performed well, more than doubling their market share to over 6%.
