August up 22.8% as strong van and truck demand continues
“August saw the strong and sustained bounce-back continue across much of the van and truck industry as operators returned to more typical replacement schedules,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive. “With the commercial vehicle market up by over 20% for the year-to-date, industry is optimistic, but short to medium term economic uncertainty is likely to temper the rate of future growth.”

August is typically a below average month in the van and truck registration calendar with respectively 5% and 6.5% of the annual total volumes during the 1997 to 2007 period. Industry is consequently cautious when using August results as a guide to assess trends in the van and truck markets. However, some positive trends set in 2011 (particularly over the three months to August) continue and others also emerged in the month. Sector analysts expect annual volume of van registrations to hold in the range 250,000 to 260,000 over the near to medium term.

As with their range of vans, Iveco has seen an uplift in their truck registrations of around 100% compared to last August , with the company selling more trucks than any other with the exception of DAF. If Iveco continue along this path they could yet overhaul Renault Trucks to take back their sixth place which they conceded to the French manufacturer earlier this year. MAN also enjoyes a successful August putting the company in third position for registrations in the month of August. This keeps them in contention for the third position – and maybe even second place by the end of the year.

Light Commercial Vehicles
A solid performance from the leading four manufacturers in August compared to their registrations back in 2010. Also worthy of not is that Iveco have enjoyed near 100% growth for two months in a row – is this a sign of the company turning a corner as their truck registrations have enjoyed a similar fillip? It looks like no matter how hard Vauxhall try they are unlikely to keep Volkswagen vans at bay much longer – 67% up on last year and still behind the challenger for second place. Mercedes-Benz moves into sixth place with just enough time remaining in the year to overhaul Renault and Peugeot for their usual fourth place in the UK registration charts.

Only Peugeot performing in August compared to 2010, although with such low numbers of registrations, one customer could make the difference between a good and bad August in the heavy vans category.
